Historical Pasco County
Pasco County was settled in 1887 after then Florida Governor E.A.
Perry signed into law the bill to divide the County of Hernando, thus
making three separate counties, Hernando, Citrus and Pasco Counties
named after U.S. Senator Samuel Pasco of Monticello. Some of the better
known historical markers are known by artists and fisherman alike. One
such place is Aripeka, which was once located in Hernando County, and
then was moved across Hammock Creek into Pasco County in 1921.
Named after a 19th Century Seminole leader, Aripeka has brought such
visitors to Pasco County such as "Babe" Ruth as well as other regulars,
such as the famous warrior Osceola and the inspirational medicine man
Aripeka (a.k.a. Sam Jones.) Illustrious artist James Rosenquist built a
house and studio in Aripeka-- maybe because this area of Pasco county
served as a source of inspiration with it's sleepy waters and small
"fishing" town charm.

Port Richey, Florida "1912 Settlers"
PORT RICHEY
was named for Aaron McLaughlin Richey - Dec. 1883. Aaron
McLaughlin Richey and his wife and daughter settle near the mouth of the
Pithlachascotee River. In 1884 he established a post office, named Port
Richey, in his house.
Renters and homeowners alike, believe that it's all about "location,
location, location!" It seems that relocating to
Pasco County was as popular in the early 1900's as it is
today. On January 20, 1912, The Tampa Daily Times wrote, "The Port
Richey colony lands have been open to settlement only a short time, yet
a number of ten and twenty acre tracts have been purchased by home
seekers, many of whom have already moved on their lands and are
beginning to make improvements. These lands are among the best in
Florida, and home seekers who look them over usually buy, feeling they
have found what they were looking for."
Early settlers found Pasco County by way of ox carts and horseback,
looking for property where they could build, plant and harvest. Tobacco,
rice, sugar cane, cotton, potatoes, tomatoes and oranges were grown on
property purchased for twenty-five to fifty dollars per acre! Now,
settlers come via SUV, convertible and even by way of boat, down U.S.
Hwy. 19, and up through the Gulf of Mexico. The landscape hasn't changed
much although over 100 years have passed--- You can still enjoy the
marshes and mangroves, the tall pine forests, cypress and oaks when you
rent in Pasco County, yet commuting to Tampa isn't a 2 day trip by
horse. It's about 40 minutes via the Veteran's Expressway. There is so
much history in Pasco County and if you settle into any one of our
rental homes, we think it won't take you long to begin to enjoy the
local flavor of your new surroundings! Take a day trip on a scenic route
that takes you from Historical New Port Richey's revitalized Main Street
(downtown NPR) all the way to J.B. Starkeys Flatwoods Adventures,
Suncoast Parkway Trail to Kumquat Groves Country Store near the Hernando
County Line-- then back again. It's 87 miles of The Natures Coast from a
historical point of view. To download and print the driving tour, visit
